EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Adreian Payne had 20 points and 14 rebounds, and No. 9 Michigan State cruised past Northwestern 85-70 on Thursday night to stay tied atop the Big Ten. The Spartans (21-4, 10-2) are even in the standings with rival Michigan -- and those two teams meet in Ann Arbor on Feb. 23. Gary Harris added 14 points for Michigan State, rebounding a bit from a poor shooting performance in a loss to Wisconsin last weekend. The Spartans shot 53 per cent from the field against a Northwestern team that came in with a sterling defensive reputation. The Wildcats (12-13, 5-7) had not allowed 80 points in a game in over a month. Michigan State was without point guard Keith Appling, who has been bothered by a wrist injury. The BC Lions head coaching search is underway. GM Wally Buono said he has spoken to Jeff Garcia and Paul LaPolice about the head coaching job and plans to ask the Calgary Stampeders for permission to speak to Dave Dickenson as well. Garcia joined the Montreal Alouettes midway through the season as an offensive coach. He helped Jonathan Crompton and the team rebound from a 1-7 start to make the Eastern Final. Paul LaPolice last coached the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in Dickenson capped his fourth season as the Stampeders offensive coordinator with a Grey Cup win on Sunday. There is speculation he will take over as head coach in Calgary once John Hufnagel retires. Buono said the team is also interested in former Saskatchewan Roughriders head coach Danny Barrett and current Hamilton Tiger-Cats defensive coordinator Orlondo Steinhauer for the job. The coaching staff wont be the only unit with a different look next year. Buono also announced the team will not be bringing back a number of veterans, including quarterback Kevin Glenn. Glenn stepped in as the starter before Travis Lulay returned to the lineup and then once again after Lulay went down with a season-ending shoulder injury. Lulay is expected to be ready for training camp next season while Glenn will not be offered a contract. The team also announced they will not be picking up the options on defensive tackle Khalif Mitchell, cornerback Dante Marsh, linebacker Jamall Johnson and punter Ricky Schmitt. The Lions finished fourth in the West Division with a 9-9 record before dropping a 50-17 decision to the Alouettes in the playoffs. Miles Sanders Jersey . "Yeah, [I heard them]," he said. Brandon Moss hit a grand slam and Scott Kazmir threw seven scoreless innings as Oakland beat the Orioles 11-1 in a game that featured another bench-clearing confrontation between the teams. For the second time in three games, Machado, the Orioles third baseman, was in the middle of a dugout-clearing scrum. "It got pretty intense there for a while," Jaso said. "There is a certain respect you have to have for this game. Its a blessing for all of us to be where we are. When I feel somebody doesnt see that and doesnt respect the game as such, it doesnt sit well with me. "I think guys like that need to be taught a lesson because theres millions of other people that would love to have the spot that he has," Jaso said. This time, Oakland left-hander Fernando Abad threw inside to Machado in the eighth. The bat flew out of Machados hands and went down the third base line. Both players exchanged words before the benches and bullpens emptied. Machado and Abad were ejected. Crew Chief Larry Vanover said Machado was ejected for throwing the bat and Abad was tossed for throwing at him a second time. Machado said he did not mean to throw the bat. "The bat slipped out of my hands," Machado said. "Trying to make contact and the umpire thought it was intentional and he tossed me at that point." On Friday, Machado didnt like the force of the tag by Oakland third baseman Josh Donaldson and the two had to be separated. Jaso also had four RBIs for the As, who took two out of three in the series and improved to a major league-best 22-12 on the road. Baltimore allowed a season-high 11 walks in its most lopsided loss of the year. Staked with an early lead, Kazmir (7-2) dominated the Orioles lineup. He allowed four hits with seven strikeouts and no walks. Jimenez (2-7), who signed a four-year, $50 million deal in the off-season, continued to struggle with his command. He allowed a season-high six runs on two hits with two strikeouts and five walks over just 2 1-3 innings, his shortest outing since April 16, 2013, against Cleveland. He has not earned a victory since May 8 and has an ERA of 5.01 ERA over 70 innings with Baltimore (31-30). Jimenez walked three consecutive batters to open the second before Jaso appeared to clear the bases with a shot over the centre field fence. However, the umpiring crew reviiewed the play for 3 minutes, 18 seconds before ruling the ball bounced off the top of the wall for a double.dddddddddddd Jimenez then walked Nick Punto to reload the bases before Moss hit his second career grand slam. "Mentally and physically, Im good," Jimenez said. "Im never going to give up. I know I disappointed the team today and the bullpen had to come into the game early throwing so many innings, but I never give up. Im going to forgot about a tough game like this one and try to get better for the team." Jaso increased the lead to 7-0 in the fourth on an RBI single to left off right-hander Brad Brach. After Brach issued three consecutive walks to load the bases again in the fifth, T.J. McFarland entered and got Jaso to hit into a fielders choice that scored Derek Norris before allowing a two-run single to Nick Punto. That was more than enough runs that Kazmir would need. "When you get a lead like that, you have to attack the hitters," Kazmir said. "You have to get strike one. Theyre trying to get something going so they want to see some pitches. Trying to get a rally started." The Orioles finally got on the board in the ninth when Chris Davis walked with the bases loaded off right-hander Ryan Cook. A single by Kyle Blanks in the eighth boosted the margin to 11-1. "Were very close to winning two out of three against statistically the best team in the league, so theyre good." Orioles manager Buck Showalter said. "We knew that. We knew that Kazmir is having about as good a year as anybody in baseball. We beat one of the best pitchers in the American League last night." NOTES: Norris left the game in the sixth after taking a back swing to the head by Machado. ... As OF Coco Crisp, in the midst of a team-high 11-game hit streak, was given a breather Sunday. "Given his neck issues, hes getting a lot better," Oakland manager Bob Melvin said. ... As 2B Alberto Callaspo ended 19-game hitless streak with a double in the fourth. ...The Orioles activated RHP Tommy Hunter (left groin strain) from the 15-day disabled list Sunday. For the ninth time in the storied history of their rivalry, the Boston Bruins and Montreal Canadiens will face off in a decisive Game 7, as the clubs battle for a berth in the conference finals Wednesday at TD Garden. Listen to all-day coverage followed by the game live on TSN Radio 690 and TSN.ca/Montreal. Also, TSN.ca will provide live streaming from the Bell Centre in Montreal during the game. The Original Six foes are deadlocked at 3-3 in the Eastern Conference semifinals and this evenings game in Boston will decide who gets to face the New York Rangers in the third round. The Rangers earned a spot in the East finals after beating Pittsburgh, 2-1, in Game 7 on Tuesday night. No rivalry in major professional sports has featured as many Game 7 battles as the one between the Bruins and Habs. Montreal is 5-3 in Game 7s against Boston, but the Bs claimed the last one with a 4-3 overtime victory at TD Garden on April 27, 2011. The Bruins, of course, went on to win their first Stanley Cup title since 1972 after surviving that opening-round series with Montreal. This marks the seventh straight season Boston will play a Game 7, setting a new NHL record. The Bruins were tied with Colorado (1998-2003) for that distinction. All told, Boston is 13-11 in Game 7s but has won four of its last five. The Canadiens are 13-9 all-time in decisive seventh games and had won four straight Game 7s before losing the 2011 clash against Boston. After losing Games 4 and 5 to fall behind 3-2 in the series, the Canadiens forced tonights contest by posting a 4-0 home win on Monday. In order to advance to the conference finals for the first time since 2010, Montreal will have to win in Boston for the first time since posting a double-overtime victory in Game 1 of this set. The Bruins, who are the top seed in the East and the defending conference champions, are 4-2 at TD Garden in this postseason. The club rallied for a 5-3 win in Game 2 and recorded a 4-2 win in Saturdays Game 5. "Go home, and get the job done," said Bruins forward Patrice Bergeron about tonights decisive battle. "We have to -- its about using (the fans) to our advantage in Game 7. Thats why you work for the home ice. Youve got to go home and be ready." Carey Price stopped 26 shots for his first shutout of the playoffs in Mondays Game 6 at the Bell Centre. Thomas Vanek scored twice, Max Pacioretty had a goal and an assist, and Lars Eller scored the other goal for the Canadiens. "At the end, we came out hard," said Vanek. "They played hard too, had some push-backs, but Price played great, as he has for all the series. We found some ways to score tonight." Montreals Nathan Beaulieu recorded an assist while making his NHL postseason debut in Game 6. Beaulieu, a 21-year-old defenseman, replaced Douglas Murray in the lineup and made a big impact when he sprung Pacioretty on a breakaway early in the second period. Pacioretty scored on Bostons Tuukka Rask to record his second goal of the playoffs and first since getting the game-winner in Game 4 of an opening-round sweep over Tampa Bay. "There were no passengers in this room tonight," said Pacioretty. "I got a bounce and waited for my chance. There was a bounce there and it landed on my stick." Rask gave up all four goals on 28 shots for the Bruins, who were blanked for the second time in these playoffs. Boston also was shut out 1-0 by Detroit in the opener of the conference quarterfinals before winning the next four games to take the series. "We should have had the momentum in this game," said Rask. "I dont think it carries over from the last game, as long as you regroup after a loss. How we handle it is how we prepare for the next one. We cant forget about what happened tonight. At the end of the day, I thought we played a pretty solid game, but we gave them some gifts." Boston holds a definite edge in terms of Game 7 experience, as Bruins captain Zdeno Chara leads all players in this series with 10 appearances. Bergeron and fellow Bruins forward Milan Lucic are next with eight Game 7s apiece. Brian Gionta leads Montreal with six Game 7s and the Habs captain is confident the less experienced Habs can pull off the series upset with a road win on Wednesday. "Weve felt confident all series against these guys," Gionta said. "We know we can bring it to them when theres no tomorrow. Theres nothing to be afraid of." Montreal forward Danny Briere was back on the ice after being a health scratch for Game 5. He played just over 10 minutes in Game 6 and didnt record a shot. Briere, however, has played in four Game 7s and has two goals and three assists in those tilts. Bergeron and Lucic lead all players in this matchup in Game 7 scoring. They each have four goals and two assists, while Bostons Brad Marchand has two goals and three helpers over five Game 7s. Price and Rask are each 1-1 in Game 7s. Montreals netminder has a 1.91 goals against average and .932 save percentage in those outings while Rask has a 3.87 GAA and .855 save percentage. This is the 34th playoff meeting between these teams, and while Montreal has won 24, Boston has won the past two series, which includes the seven-game battle in 2011. Note: Alex Galchenyuk (lower body) took part in todays optional morning skate in a non-contact jersey. If the Canadiens advance, a return in the Eastern Conference Final would be anticipated. TORONTO - With the Raptors mired in their longest losing skid of the season, Dwane Casey is strongly considering shaking up his rotation going into Saturdays contest at home to the Boston Celtics. Although Torontos coach remains tight-lipped regarding the details of a potential lineup change, insisting that no decision has been made - which should continue to be the case until just before game time - he suggested an alteration could be in the works. Well find out, well see, Casey said following an informal practice session Friday afternoon. Im not pointing fingers at anybody, at any one person. If we make an adjustment in the lineup its going to be to help solidify or give us something that were probably not getting in a certain situation or matchup. If we change it, its not saying, hey, that persons at fault for the four-game losing streak. Slow starts have plagued the team over their recent slide. In Thursdays disappointing loss to Charlotte, the Raptors allowed 31 points in the first quarter, trailing by eight (or more) after 12 minutes for the third straight contest. After the game, Casey questioned his first units energy out of the gate. Patrick Patterson, one of the teams top reserves, attributed it to a lack of focus and a lack of will. The second group contributed 49 points, more than half of Torontos overall scoring output on the night, shooting 45 per cent from the field, while the starters shot the ball at a 35 per cent clip. Kyle Lowry was 7-for-22 from the field and continues to battle the physical and mental fatigue that has been weighing him down since last weeks overtime loss in Portland, a product of overuse in the absence of DeMar DeRozan. During that stretch, the point guards minutes are up only slightly from last year, but without DeRozan theyre taxing minutes. Since DeRozan sustained his injury, Lowrys usage rate (the percentage of a teams offensive possessions that a player uses while on the court) is just under 30 per cent, up from 23 per cent earlier this season. Prior to DeRozans injury, he had attempted 21 or more field goals just five times in 521 career games, something hes done in eight of 20 games since. With DeRozan return pushed back to next week, at the earliest, the Raptors are forced to rely heavily on their point guard - theyre at a significant disadvantage whenever hes not on the floor. As a result, Casey and the coaching staff have gotten creative, hoping to lessen the demand on Lowry, while still riding him offensively. Its getting to that time where guys minutes are ramping up and its telling on them in certainly situations, mainly on the defensive end and with their shooting, shots being short, Casey said. But thats the NBA. Weve got to make adjustments as a staff and as players to get it back on track. And if it calls for getting other guys larger minutes off the bench, then thats fine too, to give guys rest. But weve just got to be creative as far as how we manage things until DeMar gets back. Among the challenges their facing is finding the right lineup combinations to put around Lowry. On Thursday he got little-to-no help from three of his fellow starters in Landry Fields, Terrence Ross and Amir Johnson - all three of whom should be under the microscope as Casey reevaluates his rotation. Fields, DeRozans understudy, would seem to be the most logical candidate for a return to the bench. The fifth-year swingman has started nine of the last 14 games, having missed the five in between with a concussion. A pleasant surprise after stepping into the starting lineup last month, Fields has tailed off since returning from his injury. Hes a smart player but has little offensive impact on account of his limited range, and although hes a solid individual defender, it hasnt exactly translated to team success on that end. The Raptors have been outscored by 58 points with him on the court this season. Production from Ross and Johnson has been sporadic this season but the intangibles they bring to that unit make their demotions unlikely. Ross shooting spaces the floor for Lowry and company, while Johnson - even an inconsistent and hobbled version - is still the teams best interior and help defender. Generally, his teammates all perform better with him on the court. That leaves James Johnson and Greivis Vasquez, who have both started games in DeRozans absence, as potential replacements, likely for Fields. Johnson started the five games Fields missed and has been one of the clubs most consistent contributors all year. He owns the second-best defensive rating on the team and has been an efficient offensive player buying into his new role. Caseys concern with extending Johnsons role, even temporarily, is rooted in the fear he may revert to the player he was, the player that would often go rogue and try to do too much on the offensive end. It would seem, as he often states himself, that the old Johnson is no more and the new version could be, and probably should be, in line for more playing time. Vasquez was Caseys initial replacement for DeRozan. While Johnson seems like the safer choice, theres something to be said for the relief Vasquez would give Lowry as a second ball handler in the backcourt. The two guards were Torontos most productive pairing last season and in the playoffs but havent had the same success together this year. Beyond that, the most pressing issue with the first unit has been their defensive energy, something Johnson is likely to address more than Vasquez would. FIGHTING THROUGH ADVERSITY The Raptors did not hold a full practice on Friday, instead players gathered at the Air Canada Centre for individual workouts and film sessions with the coaches. Casey pointed to the mental hurdles that can build up and derail a team during tough stretches like this, something he hopes to avoid by staying prepared and remaining level-headed. Adversity brings out the best or the worst in you, said Casey. Were going through an adverse time. Every team in the league that Ive ever been with goes through it. It gives you guys [in the media] something different to write about and talk about other than a winning streak, he joked. Were going through it now and its going to make us better. I dont care what team you are, until you go through something it doesnt make you better. We all are happy and full of joy and peanuts and candy when were winning, but then you turn around and you find out who the real people are when you hit adversity and thats what were going through right now. And well figure it out. While their frustration has been evident, primarily after their latest loss to Charlotte, it has been directed inward and at the situation more than at each other, which is a promising sign going forward. This Raptors team has been a notably tight knit group since they came together following last seasons trade. Although their chemistry has not been tested through adversity like this before, that togetherness should pay off now more than ever. Nobodys blaming nobody and thats a great sign, James Johnson said. Everybodys sticking together. I think this is making us closer and later down in the season togetherness is big. You learn who the leaders are on your team and whos on board, whos in the boat, Casey added. Everybodys in the boat in the locker room, theres no splintering against each other and we understand its us against everybody else. I think theyre mature enough not to [point fingers]. Its about winning. Its about figuring out a way to win. Its not about whos right, whos wrong. its about coming together as a team collectively on both ends of the floor and getting it right. Thats our job as a team, as an organization, is not pointing fingers and staying together. Tyler Ennis Jersey .4 seconds left and dribbled up court, weaving through Pitts defence. CORDOBA, Argentina -- Scotland defeated Argentina 21-19 with a late penalty on Friday to win three successive rugby tests for the first time in two years. Just as in June 2012, the Scots have won all three on the road. Following wins over the United States and Canada, Scotland produced the winning points late for the second straight match, with flyhalf Duncan Weir kicking a penalty from 40 metres in the 79th minute. Scotland trailed by one at halftime and 19-10 with 10 minutes to go, and looked like wasting a considerable advantage in possession and in the set-pieces against the feisty second-string Pumas who ran Six Nations champion Ireland close, twice. The Scots forsook makeable penalty shots for attacking lineouts around the hour mark, and blew both. So when their scrum destroyed Argentinas, Grant Gilchrist, their youngest captain in 18 years, directed Weir to kick the penalty. He nailed the attempt from 45 metres to close the gap to six and renew Scotlands hopes. Moments later, they attacked from deep and channeled the ball down the left wing of Tommy Seymour, their best attacking player. Seymour broke and sent in replacement scrumhalf Henry Pyrgos. Weir couldnt convert from thee touchline but the gap was one with seven minutes left.dddddddddddd Argentina conceded the decisive penalty by joining a Scottish rolling maul from the side. But the Pumas still gave themselves a chance to steal the win after the hooter, setting up flyhalf Nicolas Sanchez for a dropped goal from 35 metres. But Sanchez, who left the game temporarily for suspected concussion, shot wide left. Scotland, which brought in 13 reinforcements this week for the second half of its world tour, started full of vim. Nick de Luca and Seymour set up fullback Stuart Hogg for the opening try, then Seymour almost scored but was beaten by the bounce. The Pumas used that ball to attack from their 22, and eventually flanker Javier Ortega Desio crossed. Sanchez kicked a dropped goal and two penalties to put the Pumas 14-10 up, then replacement wing Joaquin Tuculet, on the field for just a minute, sped around Scotland flanker Blair Cowan and Hogg to score a great individual try. The Scots ultimately prevailed for the fourth time on Pumas soil, against only one win over the Pumas at home. Their magic touch will be tested in the tour finale next week in Port Elizabeth, against the Springboks. ' ' '

MINNEAPOLIS -- Joe Mauer hit a two-run double that just missed reaching the seats and Kevin Correia pitched a smooth six innings to help the Minnesota Twins beat the Chicago White Sox for the third straight game, 4-3 on Saturday. Glen Perkins pitched another tenuous ninth inning but got his 19th save in 22 tries after giving up two runs to blow one the night before. Adam Eaton led off with a triple and scored on Gordon Beckhams sacrifice fly. Pinch-hitter Paul Konerko then smacked a single up the middle, but Perkins struck out Jose Abreu and Adam Dunn to end it and punctuated the final swing and miss with a big pump of his left arm. With the Twins trailing 2-1, Mauers drive in the fifth inning soared over left fielder Alejandro De Aza and landed about halfway up the wall. Kendrys Morales hit the next pitch for an RBI single against Andre Rienzo (4-5), who lost his fifth straight start. Correia (4-8) gave up five runs or more in five of his first 12 starts, sliding toward replacement in the rotation, but the 33-year-old right-hander has pitched superbly in three turns since. In 18 innings, Correia has allowed a total of two earned runs and walked only four. He surrendered his share of sharp drives on this picture-perfect first-day-of-summer afternoon, but the defence behind him didnt do him any favours. Centre fielder Sam Fuld tried to dive for a two-out sinking liner by Conor Gillaspie in the first inning, but the ball skipped in front of and past him for a triple and Abreu followed with an RBI single. Then third baseman Eduardo Escobar bungled a routine ground ball by letting it slide between his legs to start the second inning. The White Sox only needed a single, a walk and a two-out hit-by-pitch to produce the unearned run. Correias 3-1 bases-loaded fastball bounced off Beckhams elbow and hit catcher Kurt Suzuki in the throat, but he was all right to stay in the game. Escobar committed a second error on a similar play the next inning, but Correia escaped trouble with a double-play groundball by Dayan Viciedo. The Brazilian-born Rienzo, who debuted for the White Sox last summer, was 4-0 after his first six starts following the rotator cuff injury that knocked Felipe Paulino out of action. Rienzo has struggled badly since, though, by finishing the fifth inning in only two of his last five turns. His ERA during the losing streak is 8.87. The Twins hit three straight two-out singles in the second inning to load the bases, and Fuld walked to force in the first run. Then Rienzo hit Brian Dozier with a pitch to put two runners on for Mauer in the fifth inning, setting the struggling six-time All-Star and three-time batting champion up for just his fourth multi-RBI game this season. Two of those have been in this series. The White Sox have hung around the pack in the American League Central all year, never losing or winning more than four games in a row, but this has been a rough start to an 11-game road trip. Rypien took the title for the first time since winning the inaugural event in 1990. Lightning storms delayed play for more than three hours. Rypien ran away from Roenick and Sorenstam, putting up big Stableford points on his back nine, going 5 under for a record-breaking third-round total of 33 points and 76 throughout the three-day event at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course. After finishing in second place in the past two years, Rypien broke through with a win in the 25th anniversary of the tournament. "In 25 years from now Ill be 76. Do you think I could do that when Im 76?" Rypien said. "It was a little bit of an advantage just from that standpoint that Im accustomed to playing in inclement weather with golf and football and then that was kind of the way it was today. It was kind of uncomfortable for everybody, but I felt fine." Rypien won $125,000 from the $600,000 purse. Sorenstam and Roenick will each get $57,500 for tying for second in the event. Roenick and Sorenstam tied for second with three-round totals of 65. It was the retired LPGA stars first appearance in the event and although she has already been invited back, she is unsure if she will play the event again next year, despite her strong finish. "I was hoping for a few more points," Sorenstam said. "I dont know if 76 would have been reachable for me the way I played today, but maybe a few more and I would have felt very comfortable and pleased.dddddddddddd" Chad Pfeifer, who lost his left leg above the knee serving in Iraq, started the day in second place, earned only 17 points and tied for fifth with former baseball star John Smoltz, who had the second-highest total of the day along with Sorenstam (23). In honour of Pfeifers effort in the event, American Century donated $25,000 to the Troops First Foundation in his name. "I truly thought after (Saturday) that Chad was going to be the player to beat," Rypien said. "After he double-bogeyed two and then came back with birdies on three and four, I said to myself, This is who I have to beat." Actor Jack Wagner, also a former champion of the event, made a strong push Sunday with 22 points to finish fourth, his 19th top-10 finish in the event. Roenick and Rypien were tied for the lead with 64 Stableford points through 15 holes when play was suspended due to lighting. Its the second day in a row weather delayed play, a short delay Saturday was also due to lightning. But following the delay, Rypien distanced himself from the rest of the field. He earned 12 points on the final three holes, starting with an eagle on 16 and birdied 17 and 18, recovering from a shot into the trees on 18. Roenick struggled after the rain delay, bogeying 17 and doubling 18 after hitting his approach into the water. It was Roenicks sixth top-10 finish in the past six years and his best in the event. After winning the U.S. Open in 2013, she lost in the fourth round at the Australian Open, the second round at the French and the third round at Wimbledon.I was so hyped on getting to 18 and I lost every Grand Slam early. I didnt make it to any quarterfinals, Williams said. Then after Wimbledon I decided to just — not necessarily not care — but just relax. It all kind of came back for me after that ... and I think its been working. That approach helped her win the U.S. Open and, if it works again on Saturday against 2008 champion Sharapova, it will help Williams move above Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova on the list of major winners. She would be behind only Steffi Graf, with 22 titles, among champions in the Open era.The statistics point to another win for Williams, but shes not getting ahead of herself.Again. I have to win. Everyones expecting me to win. But well see, Williams said. Shes playing unbelievable. She was almost out of the tournament and has been playing better every single match. Its impressive.Williams, who has struggled with a cold for a week, said shed benefit from a tough workout in the all-American semifinal against Keys, who pounded her with heavy groundstrokes and a big serve for the first set.Keys, playing in her first Grand Slam semifinal, saved seven match points on serve in a penultimate game that lasted more than 11 minutes. Williams closed with an ace in the next game to reach her 23rd major final. She pushed me really hard the first set .dddddddddddd.. and I had to really dig deep mentally to get through that, Williams said. It was a little frustrating. I had like nine or 10 match points and couldnt close it out. That doesnt happen so much. She played like she didnt have anything to lose.Sharapova, who beat No. 10-seeded Ekaterina Makarova 6-3, 6-2 in an all-Russian semifinal, has won only two of her 18 career meetings with Williams — both in 2004. She started 2015 with a title at the Brisbane International and, ever since saving two match points in her second-round match against Russian qualifier Alexandra Panova, has been growing in confidence.I think my confidence should be pretty high going into a final of a Grand Slam no matter who Im facing and whether Ive had a terrible record, to say the least, against someone, Sharapova said. It doesnt matter. I got there for a reason. I belong in that spot. I will do everything I can to get the title. In mens play, Andy Murray reached the Australian Open final for the fourth time, and is desperate to end a title drought Down Under. The sixth-seeded Murray beat No. 7 Tomas Berdych 6-7 (6), 6-0, 6-3, 7-5 in a semifinal laced with heavy hitting, flashes of anger and profanities.Murray lost finals here to Roger Federer in 2010 and Novak Djokovic in 11 and 13. Since then, he has won the U.S. Open and Wimbledon to end long title droughts for British men. Hell get another chance to claim the Australian title on Sunday, against the winner of Fridays semifinal between Djokovic and defending champion Stan Wawrinka.Tension was high before the match because Murrays former coach, Dani Vallverdu, is now working for Berdych. You wanted there to be tension, Murray said. A lot was made of Dani, my ex-coach, working with him. I felt it was a little unfair and unnecessary. This is sport, theres more to life than sport. It was a little unfair and created extra tension. An aggravated Murray bristled when Berdych spoke a few words to him after the first-set tiebreaker, and yelled profanities throughout the match. TV cameras appeared to show his fiancee, Kim Sears, uttering expletives in support.Murray said the emotional reactions were understandable given the hype leading into the match. ' ' '

The native of Mont-Tremblant, Que., captured a World Cup downhill event Saturday, his second this year and fifth career victory on the circuit. Many have asked: why on earth is it taking so long to announce Shawn Thorntons suspension? On December 7, Thornton pulled Brooks Orpik to the ice from behind and punched him a few times in the face for good measure. Orpik was taken off on a stretcher, and having suffered a concussion, hasnt played since the incident. The scene was reminiscent of Tie Domi on Ulf Samuelsson, and to a lesser extent Marty McSorley and Todd Bertuzzi. Thorntons hearing will be Friday, almost a full week after the incident. Its not a surprise this one is taking time. The weight of the NFL concussion lawsuits, the recently filed NHL concussion class action and the Boogaard lawsuit are likely weighing heavily on the decision making process. The league may be looking at this one very carefully to ensure they send the right message, not only to players, parents and fans, but also to potential jurors. And that message is this: we are taking all reasonable steps to ensure the safety of our players. The league will want to be seen as being proactive when it comes to protecting the brains of players, and that means firmly addressing unnecessary risk on the ice. Hockey is an inherently dangerous sport and that will never change. Still, contact that is not part of the game will be scrutinized. It seems unlikely that NHL vice-president of player safety Brendan Shanahan will be working alone on this suspension. This will be a group effort with lawyers intimately involved. This incident raises complex legal issues and will be considered with care. Ultimately, the suspension is less a hockey decision and more a legal decision. So whatever the ruling by the NHL, the assumption needs to be that the league will actively consider the legal angles before making its decision. This is an important time for the league. The discussion about violence in sports has been rising over the past few years as the public becomes more aware of the potential long-term impact of headshots. Indeed, there seems to be a trend emerging: concerns over violence in sports have become part of the narrative of the game of hockey and they dont seem to be going away anytime soon.dddddddddddd And, in part, those concerns are now being expressed in lawsuits. A Crime? One more question that is raised: were Thorntons actions a crime? The answer lies in the issue of consent, which is your starting point when assessing whether a hit on the ice is elevated to a crime. In hockey, when a player steps on the ice, he is agreeing to some form of bodily contact and the risk of injury that flows from that contact. Hockey is understood to be an inherently violent game and injuries happen. At law, this principle of consent is called voluntary assumption of risk. Players assume risk when playing and cant turn around and sue for the harm that comes from that type of fair and expected contact. However, a distinction should be made. Players are only consenting incidental contact (or contact that is part of the game like body checks). Players are not consenting to acts that are outside the scope of what is acceptable in the game. When that happens, you start asking if a crime has occurred. We did that in cases like Bertuzzi on Moore, McSorley on Brashear and Alex Perezhogin on Garrett Stafford. And we are doing that with Thornton on Orpik. Its tough to argue that Thorntons actions constitute incidental contact. Pulling Orpik to the ice from behind and punching him repeatedly in the face is not contact that is accepted as part of the game. So to characterize the incident as an assault is not unreasonable. And just because it happened on the ice doesnt change anything. Assault is assault is assault. That being said, the incident wasnt bad enough to warrant charges and thats why we didnt see any materialize. Finally, as far as length of the suspension, my best guess is 12 to 15 games. Anything north of 15 games will signal an acknowledgement that times have changed. ' ' '
