LOS ANGELES, Calif. - When Joe Pavelski scored on the Sharks first shot, he evoked memories of San Joses banner-ceremony-spoiling win at Staples Center on opening night. The Los Angeles Kings spent the rest of the evening demonstrating why theyve got all the banners that count in this rivalry.Anze Kopitar and Jake Muzzin scored power-play goals, Jonathan Quick made 21 saves and the Kings returned from the holiday break with a 3-1 victory over their upstate rivals on Saturday night.Tyler Toffoli also scored in the defending Stanley Cup champions third victory in four games. The Kings forechecked impressively, passed sharply and played their vaunted puck-possession game to dominant effect, largely neutralizing the Sharks over the final 57 minutes after Pavelskis opening shot trickled through Quick.Everybody says the best defence is offence, anyway, said Kopitar, who had a goal and an assist on the power play. You keep the puck to yourself, and thats the best thing to do.Kopitar led the Kings once-struggling power play, which kept on humming after the break. Los Angeles has scored a power-play goal in five straight games, including multiple goals in four straight contests for the first time since March 1993.I think pucks are just going in for us, defenceman Drew Doughty said. We have so much firepower on our power-play units, and its finally coming together.Pavelski scored his 17th goal and Antti Niemi stopped 26 shots for the Sharks, who lost in regulation for just the second time since Nov. 26. San Jose uncharacteristically failed to stay out of the box, forced to kill more than three penalties for the first time in December. They were the better team the whole night, Sharks coach Todd McLellan said. We were beat in special teams, and that was evident, but theres much more to it than that. The grinding part of the game, we were beaten at as well. They were better on the walls. They were better at taking time and space away, and their forecheck was better. So theres no doubt the better team won tonight.Los Angeles also pulled even with San Jose in second place in the Pacific Division standings — a fact that means something to the Kings, who have won two Stanley Cups and 10 playoff series in the last three years despite winning no division titles.Theyre a division rival, so when you get points against them, its more than just two points, Doughty said. Its huge. We need to be moving up in the playoff standings and moving up in the division, and in order to do that, we need to beat division teams.Pavelski put the Sharks ahead just 2:39 in, capitalizing on a turnover by Justin Williams and a pass from Joe Thornton that turned out to be their lone offensive highlight. When the games are intense like this, you want to be at your best, and we werent tonight, Pavelski said. We werent very disciplined in a lot of areas. We gave up a lot of odd-man rushes and took a lot of penalties, things we havent been doing lately when we were winning.Toffoli evened it later in the period, snapping his personal 10-game goal drought on a remarkable cross-ice pass from defenceman Jamie McBain, who has points in three straight games. Toffoli, Marian Gaborik and Tanner Pearson have 11 goals apiece to lead the Kings.Kopitar then scored on a back-side rebound of Gaboriks shot in the second period. Four of his eight goals in a slow-starting offensive season have been on the power play.Muzzin added his sixth goal with a heavy shot on another power play early in the third.NOTES: Kopitars right ear was cut in the second period after apparently getting clipped an errant stick in front of the net. He went to the dressing room but returned moments later, putting off stitches until after the game. ... The Kings have won nine of their last 11 regular-season home games against the Sharks. ... Los Angeles matched Tampa Bay and Toronto for the NHL lead with 14 home victories. Nike Air Max Plus Soldes . TMZ has released an audio recording where a voice identified as Donald Sterling, owner of the LA Clippers, is making highly offensive remarks about African-Americans to his then-girlfriend V. Stiviano. The Comments He are some of the comments attributed to Sterling on the recording: - "It bothers me a lot that you want to broadcast that youre associating with black people. Do you have to?" - "You can sleep with [black people]. You can bring them in, you can do whatever you want. The little I ask you is not to promote it on that ... and not to bring them to my games." - "Im just saying, in your lousy (expletive) Instagram, you dont have to have yourself with, walking with black people." - "...Dont put him [Magic] on an Instagram for the world to have to see so they have to call me. And dont bring him to my games." League Responds NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has expressed profound disappointment over the comments and has urged the public to allow for due process to run its course before any action is taken. "All members of the NBA family should be afforded due process and a fair opportunity to present their side of any controversy," Mr. Silver said, "which is why Im not yet prepared to discuss any potential sanctions against Donald Sterling. We will, however, move extraordinarily quickly in our investigation." The Clippers have declared that these comments do not reflect the views of Sterling and that they are looking into the issue. The public was also reminded that the source of the recording, Stiviano, is being sued by Sterlings wife for embezzling $1.8 million in the form of cash, cars and other items from the Clippers owner, thereby suggesting that the veracity of the recording should be questioned. Investigation The first step for the NBA is authenticating the recording. That means confirming that the voice on the recording is that of Sterling and that the recording was not doctored. Sterling may admit that the voice is his, but allege that his ex-girlfriend doctored the tape as payback for being sued by the Clippers owner. Authenticating the recording may not be an easy process. The NBA will need to get Stiviano to agree to be interviewed (likely under oath), which she may decline. If she refuses to talk to the league, there is little it can do to force her since the NBA does not have subpoena power (or an ability to force Stiviano to submit to an interview). The NBA could also hire an expert to review the recording to assess the likelihood that it has been tampered with and whether the voice is that of Sterling. The NBA is being criticized for not suspending Sterling pending the outcome of the investigation. While the sentiment is understandable, the NBA is bang on here. It is important to observe the principles of fundamental justice, which include that justice be administered fairly. A person is entitled to a fair shake even in the face of despicable comments. The NBA is proceeding with its investigation expeditiously and is aiming to have it done in a "few days". Until then, it is important, if not critical, that the process be respected. Fines, Suspensions and Sale of Team Some people around the league want Sterling gone permanently given his a history of being racially insensitive. In 2009, Sterling was sued for discriminatory housing practices after being accused of seeking to drive African-Americans and Latinos from his apartment buildings. The billionaire settled the lawsuit by paying $2.725 million. He was also sued by his former GM Elgin Baylor, who filed a wrongful termination lawsuit that included allegations of racism. In part, Baylor alleged that Sterling rejected a coach because he was African-American. While some want Sterling gone, the NBA is unlikely to force Sterling to sell the team. If the league tried, they would likely be sued by Sterling, who in part, would allege that the league is violating antitrust laws. If successful, such a lawsuit could get Sterling a massive payout. A more likely scenario is a long suspension. And there is a precedent for that: former Cincinnati Reds owner Marge Schott. In December 1992, Schott was quoted in the New York Times as saying that her use of the N-word was a joke after referring to Eric Davis and Dave Parker as her "million-dollar n------". In that same interview, she made favourable comments about Adolf Hitler. As a result, MLB suspended Schott for one year. In 1996, she was suspended for another two years after more racially insensitive comments. In 1998, with her health failing, she agreed to sell the team. Apart from a suspension, we could also see a substantial fine. Ultimately, a fine of $1 million to $5 million would not be surprise. If authenticated, the comments are of course completely unacceptable, highly offensive and frankly disturbing. As well, according to a recent report, African-Americans comprise 76 per cent of all NBA players, while 81 per cent of players are of colour. So the NBA knows one thing: it has to get this right. And that may mean a long suspension and hefty fine. Expulsion, however, doesnt seem likely given the legal challenges. Shoes Wholesale China Market . But with only a 10-point lead over 12th place Minnesota in the tightly packed Western Conference, the Sharks know they have their work cut out for them down the stretch of the season. Were in a dogfight, coach Todd McLellan said. Thats the best way of putting it. My time here with the group weve been comfortably in the playoff picture. There have been a couple other years where we had to battle and were in the middle of one of those battles or dogfights.San Jose has made the playoffs for 10 straight seasons — the second-longest active streak in the NHL. But after becoming just the fourth NHL team to lose a best-of-seven series after winning the first three games in the first round last year against Los Angeles, Sharks general manager Doug Wilson talked about the need to take a step back before taking two steps forward. The team made few off-season additions, choosing instead to give more opportunities to young players. Rookies like Melker Karlsson and Barclay Goodrow have made contributions this season and young veterans like Joe Pavelski, Logan Couture and Marc-Edouard Vlasic have taken on added responsibility. But more work is needed if the Sharks are going to reach the level of the top teams in the Western Conference. Were in a playoff spot right now, so positive, Couture said about his outlook on the team. I ddont know if weve played our best hockey yet.dddddddddddd. Were still improving, which is also positive. We realize we have a tough road ahead to get to the playoffs.Consistency has been a major problem for the Sharks, who have seven losses against the bottom six teams in the league but are 6-0-2 against the four first-place teams. Were a middle-of-the-pack team right now, McLellan said. Until we declare ourselves any different and thats through play and wins, thats what we are. We have to take steps forward to overcome that. The Sharks will begin the post-break stretch on Thursday night against Anaheim without two key players. Defenceman Justin Braun and forward Tommy Wingels both broke bones in their left hands on Jan. 19 against New Jersey. Braun got hurt blocking a shot from Mike Cammalleri and Wingels was injured on a slash by Cammalleri later in the game. Both players are expected to miss a few more weeks but would like to be back in time to play the outdoor game at Levis Stadium on Feb. 21 against Los Angeles. Whether that is possible remains to be seen. The Sharks managed to win their first game without those two key players last Wednesday when they beat Los Angeles 4-2.Tommy and Brauny are big parts of our team, Goodrow said. Tommy can really play anywhere in our lineup — special teams, PK, PP. Hes a key guy on our team and with him out, guys like myself are going to need to step up and bring a little more to the table. The Sharks do expect to get rookie defenceman Mueller back. After winning Sundays Heritage Classic game in Vancouver, there is a sense that perhaps the Senators can use that victory as a springboard down the stretch. One would think that winning one of the NHLs signature events – with 50,000 fans watching in the stadium and a larger-than-normal television audience – could propel this team onto a much-needed winning streak. But looking at the brief history of these events, there is hardly any connection between winning an outdoor game and any subsequent success in the NHL. A few years ago, the 2008 Penguins and the 2009 Red Wings each made it to the Stanley Cup Final in the same year after winning the Winter Classic game – although that was more likely the result of having a powerhouse lineup than anything to do with playing in an outdoor game. For the Senators, a better comparable would be to look at some of the less dominant teams that have won an outdoor game and how that affected them immediately afterwards. This season, for example, the Toronto Maple Leafs won the Winter Classic in Ann Arbor – but then turned around and lost their next four games. In 2011, the Calgary Flames beat the Montreal Canadiens 4-0 in the Heritage Classic at McMahon Stadium. The Flames ended up losing three of their next five games, so any momentum they gained from winning the outdoor game was non-existent. The same can be said for the 2003-04 Montreal Canadiens, who beat the Edmonton Oilers in the first-ever outdoor game at Commonwealth Stadium. The Habs managed to win only two of their next five games – although they did manage a pair of ties as well. This season, we even saw the Anaheim Ducks stumble after winning the outdoor game at Dodger Stadium against the Los Angeles Kings. The Ducks lost four of their next five games – marking their worst stretch of the regular season. The same thing happened to the 2010 Boston Bruins and the 2011 Washington Capitals – each team lost four of their next five games after winning the Winter Classic. So in many cases, it seems like teams suffer a letdown – rather than an uplift – following a big win in an outdoor game. Heres a look at how every team that has won an outdoor game fared in their next 5 games: 2003-04 Montreal Canadiens – Won Heritage Classic 4-3 at EdmontonNext 5 games: 2-1-2 record 2007-08 Pittsburgh Penguins – Won Winter Classic 2-1 at BuffaloNext 5 games: 4-1-0 record 2008-09 Detroit Red Wings – Won Winter Classic 6-4 at ChicagoNext 5 games: 4-1-0 record 2009-10 Boston Bruins– Won Winter Classic 2-1 at BostonNext 5 games: 1-4-0 record 2010-11 Washigton Capitals – Won Winter Classic 3-1 at PittsburghNext 5 games: 1-2-2 record 2010-11 Calgary Flames – Won Heritage Classic 4-0 at CalgaryNext 5 games: 2-2-1 record 2011-12 New York Rangers – Won Winter Classic 3-2 at PhiladelphiaNext 5 games: 4-1-0 record 2013-14 Toronto Maple Leafs – Won Winter Classic 3-1 at Ann ArborNext 5 games – 1-4-0 record 2013-14 Anaheim Ducks – Won Stadium Series 3-0 at Los AngelesNext 5 games – 1-4-0 record 2013-14 NY Rangers – Swept Stadium Series 7-3 (Devils) and 2-1 (Islanders) at New YorkNext 5 games: 4-1-0 record Nike Air Max 270 Outlet . Danny Manning grew up watching Wake Forest play games at the Greensboro Coliseum, memories that linger in his mind all these years later. He never thought one day hed coach the Demon Deacons. Manning, the former Kansas star who spent the past two seasons coaching Tulsa, was hired Friday as Wake Forests basketball coach. Hell be introduced at a news conference next week on campus in Winston-Salem, N.C., a short drive from where Manning grew up. "I spent a lot of my formative childhood years in North Carolina," Manning told The Associated Press on Friday at AT&T Stadium, the site of this weekends Final Four. "I spent the majority of my life in Kansas," Manning said, "but this was a chance to be a part of a university that I share the same values and history with." His hiring ends Wake Forests two-week search for a replacement for Jeff Bzdelik, who resigned under intense public pressure following four mostly unremarkable seasons. Manning, who was 38-29 with two post-season berths in two seasons at Tulsa, interviewed this week and toured the campus in Winston-Salem on Wednesday before taking the job two days later. His hiring is considered somewhat risky because of his lack of head coaching experience, but theres no question he brings instant name recognition to a program that dropped to near the bottom of the expanded Atlantic Coast Conference. "There have been very few players who have had as much success on the court as Danny," Wake Forest athletic director Ron Wellman said in a statement. "He has played for and worked under a number of legendary coaches and he has been successful in his coaching career. We fully expect that Dannys coaching career will reflect the excellence of his playing career." Manning attended Greensboro Page High School before his family moved to Lawrence, Kan., for his senior year, and when it was time to choose a college, he picked Kansas over North Carolina. After his "Danny and the Miracles" team won the national title in Kansas City, not far from the Jayhawks campus, Manning was drafted first overall by the Los Angeles Clippers in 1988. He made two All-Star teams during a career marred by injuries before joining coach Bill Selfs staff at Kansas in 2003. Responsible primarily for working with post players, Manning was promoted to assistant coach in 2006 and two years ago earned his first head coaching job at Tulsa. Self called Manning "one of the most accomplished, humble people youll ever meet." The 47-year-old Manning took the Golden Hurricane to the CBI in his first year and followed that by guiding them to the Conference USA tournament title and their first NCAA tournament berth since 2003. They earned a No. 13 seed and lost to UCLA in their tournament opener. Tulsa forward Rashad Smith said he found out about Mannings move through teammates and media reports, though he said the coach texted him shortly thereafter. Guard James Woodard said it was "kind of shocking. "You know in the back of your mind, the run we had this year, there would be a lot of opportunities out there," Woodard said. "Im happy for him." SAN ANTONIO -- Tony Parker had 18 points to lead six players in double figures and the San Antonio Spurs rolled past the listless Brooklyn Nets 113-92 on Tuesday night. Manu Ginobili and Tim Duncan had 15 points each and Tiago Splitter and Patty Mills each had 12. Miles Plumlee and Shaun Livingston had 15 points each to lead Brooklyn. Kevin Garnet was held to two points, failing to make a field for only the second time in his 19-year career and the first time since 1996. The Nets (10-30) began the season with the same hope as a New Years Eve celebration after a blockbuster trade brought former NBA champions Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Jason Terry to the team. That promise ended quickly and the lacklustre loss to the Spurs was a microcosm of their season so far. It got so bad for the Nets they couldnt even end the game. Brooklyn was forced to call a timeout with 0.2 seconds left after a long delay because they only had four players who hadnt retreated to the locker room -- thinking the game had ended. Several Nets had not fully retreated, but resumed after initially stopping when the officials ruled the game was not over. With first-year coach Jason Kidd and his staff standing around puzzled, Andrei Kirilenko slowly walked back to the court and was subbed in to complete the game with an inbounds pass. While San Antonio walked off the court collectively high-fiving and in good spirits, Brooklyn walked in separate packs, with the five players who were on the court appearing tired as they trudged to the locker room slowly. Kirilenko was playing his first game after missing the last 25 with back spasms. He had four points. The Nets fared better offensively in the second half, but their defence was just as lacklustre. The Spurs set a season high for points in the third quarter in a 39-32 period. San Antonio went 4 for 4 on 3-pointers in the third quarter, steadily increasing its lead to 65-38 on Marco Belinellis with 9:22 remaining and to 98-62 on Patty Mills in the final seconds. Gregg Popovich emptied his bench for the fourth quarter, sitting Duncan, Parker, Ginobili for the entire period. The loudest ovation in the fourth quarter came when former Spurs centre David Robinson was shown on the giant television screens at midcourt. NOTES: Jason Terry was shocked by the hostile reception he received upon entering the game early in the first quarter. As the booing grew louder and louder, Terry turned to the crowd, smiled, raised his arms, shrugged and asked "what." Terry has spent the past two seasons in the Eastern Conference with the Boston Celtics and Nets, but Spurs fans obviously have not forgotten his testy battles with the Spurs during his days with the Dallas Mavericks. . Popovich was upset with Ginobili for failing to pass the ball on a 2-on-1 break against Mirza Teletovic to close the first quarter. Ginobili missed a contested layup, with the buzzer sounding as the ball bounced away. Popovich immediately stormed the court and began berating Ginobili, who gestured he thought he had a scoop layup. Popovich followed Ginobili to the bench, but was held back by Duncan momentarily. Popovich eventually worked his way around Duncan and yelled at Ginobili on the bench between quarters. Duncan, who wasnt in the lineup at the time, consoled a visibly upset Ginobili prior to the start of the second quarter. Weise was in the main event, trading punches with Bostons Nathan Horton in a long battle away from the main melee. We had a line brawl seven minutes in, Weise, now a member of the Montreal Canadiens, said Wednesday. So I think the fans, the media and everybody got what they wanted there. The gritty winger does not expect quite the same when the Bruins visit the Bell Centre for the Canadiens home opener on Thursday night, or that there will be any spillover of bitterness from Montreals seven-game victory over their archrivals in the second round of playoffs last spring. In the handshake line after Game 7, Bostons Milan Lucic reportedly told Weise Im going to kill you next year, and also had words for defenceman Alexei Emelin.None of the Canadiens take Lucic literally. Weise expects a hard-fought game against a rival and divisional opponent, but not a war.I dont see it being the case, said Weise. The media kinda blows things up a bit and the games have a hard time living up to that, so were just focusing on having a good game.Being our first home game, everyones excited, the crowds going to be jumping and everybody will be ready to go.Lucic took exception to Weises mock muscle flex in the finale, a mimic of the Bruins wingers chest thumping and muscle flexing earlier in the series. The Bruins had a game Wednesday night in Detroit, so there was no word on their approach to the rematch with Montreal, although games between the teams are always tough and sometimes nasty.I expect a loud crowd, I expect us to come out and play well and I expect an intense game, added Weise. Any time Boston plays Montreal theres a lot of animosity.I dont think theres going to be anything extra. Its always there. On Lucic, Weise said: Thats the way he plays every night. He plays hard. Hes intense. I dont think anythings different if he plays us or any other team. That will be seen when the puck drops as the Canadiens return home after starting the season 3-1-0 on the road. The trip included three comeback victories after weak first periods followed by a 7-1 thrashing at the hands in Tampa on Monday night. The Lightning took revenge for a first round sweep at the hands of the Canadiens in the opening round in April. The Bruins will no doubt be seeking vengeance as well, said winger Brendan Gallagher.Weve been in that situation, he said. When you lose to a team in a playoff series; the disappointment, and how badly you want too beat them the next time we play them.ddddddddddddampa was like that. They fully deserved to win that game. They were a much better hockey team, and Bostons going to be the same. We have to match that intensity. We have to do what we did well in those playoff series.Gallagher, who brings a similar grit and intensity but in a much smaller package, trains with Lucic in the off-season in Vancouver. His father, Ian Gallagher, is strength and conditioning coach for the junior Vancouver Giants and has worked with Lucic for several years.Brendan Gallagher calls his Boston rival a good person who happens to play hockey with fire and a strong dose of nastiness.Knowing Looch and the type of person and player he is, hes going to play a good game, said Gallagher. Hes competitive and thats what makes him Milan Lucic and such a tough player to play against.Hes going to be up for it, but our group will be the same way. Its definitely going to be a fun game to be part of. Youre going to have to manage your emotions. Its going to be a battle.Coach Michel Therrien said he expects the usual intensity of a Boston-Montreal game, but he was more concerned about his special teams, which have gone 0-for-14 on the power play and a mediocre 14-for-18 on the penalty kill. The special teams units worked an extra half hour before practice, something Therrien said they werent able to do on the road.Weve got to be better on special teams, said Therrien. We havent had much chance to work on the power play because of the schedule. On the road, we watched video and worked on Xs and Os, but you need to practice. The next two weeks will be good for us because were home for four games and well have lots of time to practice.Left-winger Max Pacioretty said the team needs to bear down more on the power play and earn their chances.Last game we were terrible on the power play, he said. You have to have the same mindset as 5 on 5, in playing hard and winning your battles. Sometimes you get too comfortable on a power play and expect the guy next to you to make a play.It appears the Canadiens will have Emelin back after the defenceman missed two games with an upper body injury. And it looks like Nathan Beaulieu will come out of the lineup, while six-foot-six Jarred Tinordi will play on the third pairing with Mike Weaver. No change is expected up front, unless Therrien opts to give Travis Moen a start on the fourth line, perhaps in Weises spot. Moen is a strong penalty killer.Michael Bournival, who has yet to play this season, was sent to AHL Hamilton to play a pair of weekend games and is to return to Montreal on Monday. Therrien said the second-year forward needs playing time to stay sharp. ' ' '
INDIANAPOLIS -- This time, Jordan Morgan got the ball to bounce the right way -- and Michigan celebrated. A little more than one year after missing a last-second tip-in that would have given the Wolverines a share of the Big Ten regular-season title, the 6-foot-8 forward scored on a layup with 7.9 seconds left to give No. 8 Michigan a 64-63 victory over Illinois in Fridays Big Ten tournament quarterfinals and a shot at another league championship. "Im telling you -- I probably exaggerate -- 10,000 times, at least 2,000 times in five years Jordan Morgan has run that same drill," coach John Beilein said. "Theres a bag to hit him, you still got to catch it in a crowd and keep it up and dunk it if he can. He said he wanted to add a little drama to the game, so he decided to put it up on the rim. Illinois had a chance to win it when Tracy Abrams drove in for a layup, expecting contact, but the ball hit the front of the rim and bounced off. No foul was called. Its about time something went right for the Wolverines (24-7) in this tournament. Since going 3-0 to win the first title in 1998, Michigan has not won more than one game in the annual tourney. The Wolverines later vacated that tourney title because of NCAA infractions, and Michigan has endured everything from an embarrassing 21-turnover game in a 2006 first-round loss to Evan Turners buzzer-beating 40-foot heave, which gave rival Ohio State a 69-68 quarterfinal win in 2010. Things are supposed to be different this year. After ending a 28-year drought between outright regular-season titles with a win at Illinois last week, Michigan came into this weekend with the No. 1 tourney seed for the first time in school history and with a full head of steam -- six straight wins. But it almost happened again. Michigan blew a 13-point second-half lead, scored just six points in the final 7 1/2 minutes and then wound up getting bailed out by Morgan when Big Ten player of the year changed the play coach John Beilein called in the huddle. "I was looking to be aggressive and raised up to shoot and man, the guy guarding me was still chasing me and the big was chasing me too and J-Mo rolled down the lane and he was wide open," Stauskas said. "I hit him with the ball and he laid it in." The Wolverines usual trio led the way. Stauskas had 19 points despite going 4 of 12 from the field and 2 of 10 on 3-pointers against Illinois zone defence, Glenn Robinson III had 15 points and seven rebounds and Caris LeVert finished with 13 points, five rebounds and four assists. Yet it was Morgan, who wound up the star. He made the only two shots he took -- none bigger than the layup he never expected that sent Michigan into Saturdays semifinals against either fourth-seeded Nebraska or fifth-seeded Ohio State, who played in the second quarterfinal of the day. Michigan swept Nebraska this season and won at Ohio State in this seasons only meeting with the Buckeyes. Morgan, who missed the shot that gave Indiana last years outright regular season title, made this one. "As far as catching it, I just put it on the rim and got a nice roll," he said matter-of-factly. Ninth-seeded Illinois (19-14) was on the cusp of pulling off a major upset after finally retaking a 59-58 lead on Rices driving layup with 4:53 left. The Illini allowed just one 3-pointer, one free throw but couldnt stop Morgans layup the rest of the way. Abrams and Rayvonte Rice each finished with 11 points. Kendrick Nunn had 10 points as the Illini lost for only the second time in seven games. "Its obviously an uncontested shot that I probably could make," Abrams said. "We obviously wanted to get that one in and we wanted to win, but there was a lot of other plays that we can account back to that we could have did different or could have got an extra rebound." Illinois zone defence changed game. Following a media timeout with 11:26 left, Stauskas made two free throws to give the Wolverines a 55-44 lead. The Illini answered with 10 straight points and finally took the lead on Rices driving layup with 4:53 left. Michigan tied the score at 61 with 3:10 to go, but all the Wolverines could muster the rest of the way was one free throw from Stauskas until the surprised Morgan got the right roll. "Well, were thrilled to get that win because as you can see, as Illinois has shown in their last six games, how well the program has played after a tough January," Beilein said. "They proved how good they were, and, fortunately, we got some good bounces around the basket to finish the game." Stitched Tigers Jerseys . -- Phil Mickelson came to the St. Detroit Tigers Gear . His performance in the 7-3 win was much more impressive considering he was battling a case of food poisoning and was ill in both the second and third innings. "I felt terrible in the third inning, I thought: Im not going to make it," he said. "But you keep pushing yourself. Its the competitive side. I didnt want to come out of the game. I didnt want to tax the bullpen and I guess I wasnt dying, so I was able to pitch." Cosart (6-5) allowed nine hits and three runs in his longest outing since May 5 for the win. Matt Dominguez broke out of a slump with two hits, including a three-run double in Houstons big third inning to help the Astros to the victory. Dominguez was 1 for 12 in the first three games of this homestand before singling in the second inning. The Astros led by one when he cleared the bases with his double in a five-run third inning that made it 5-1. "He obviously had a couple days there where he wasnt seeing the ball too good," manager Bo Porter said. "I felt like he did a great job of making them get the ball up today. The base-clearing double was a huge hit at that moment of the game." Tampa Bay starter Chris Archer (3-4) was done in by an error and a lack of control in his shortest start this season. He allowed three hits and six runs -- one earned -- with three walks in three innings. The Astros got back on track after striking out a season-high 16 times in a 6-1 loss in the opener Friday night. Dexter Fowler had two RBIs and Marwin Gonzalez, who was filling in for the injured Jose Altuve, had three hits and scored twice. Altuve missed his second straight game after being hit on the right hand by a pitch on Thursday night. "Marwin he has been absolutely huge for us the entire season," Porter said. "Whether its giving Dominguez a day at third base or stepping in at shortstop and now stepping in at second base for Altuve being hit by a pitch, hes been constant."t; Evan Longoria homered and drove in all of the runs for the Rays, who have lost 15 of their past 18 games.dddddddddddd Rookie Kevin Kiermaier doubled with one out in the first and scored on a single by Longoria to put Tampa Bay up 1-0. Gonzalez got things going in the third with a one-out double before advancing to third on a wild pitch. Fowler reached and Gonzalez scored to tie it at 1-1 on an error by Archer with two outs when he missed the catch at first base. Archer slipped and fell onto his stomach while trying to make that catch, and was unable to locate his pitches after that. He plunked George Springer on the left shoulder and walked Jon Singleton before giving Houston the lead by walking Jason Castro. Dominguez followed with his double to centre field, which hit on the wall just inches shy of the home run line, to make it 5-1. The play was reviewed and upheld. Archer escaped the inning by striking out Chris Carter. "I didnt execute pitches," Archer said. "It had nothing to do with me not making that play at first base. Yeah, I was frustrated. Theres a ton of plays in a game. There were 40 pitches after that where I could have executed." Alex Presley drew a walk to start the fourth inning and chase Archer. He was replaced by Cesar Ramos, who was greeted with a single by Gonzalez. Ramos struck out Jonathan Villar before Fowlers two-run double to centre field pushed the lead to 7-1. Desmond Jennings singled with one out in the fifth before Longoria launched his eighth home run this season into the Crawford Boxes in left field to get Tampa Bay within 7-3. NOTES: The series wraps up on Sunday when Tampa Bay left-hander David Price opposes Brad Peacock. ... Indianapolis, IN (SportsNetwork.com) - Andrew Luck picked apart Cincinnatis secondary, while the Colts defense did the rest in shutting down the banged- up Bengals and rolling to a 26-10 playoff victory. The Colts never trailed in this AFC Wild Card mismatch and advanced to face a familiar opponent in Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos next Sunday. The Bengals were shown another early exit, as Marvin Lewis fell to 0-6 in the postseason as Cincinnatis head coach, the last four coming with Andy Dalton under center. Dalton threw for just 155 yards on 18-of-35 passing, but was pressured all game and was without his top two targets in wide receiver A.J. Green and tight end Jermaine Gresham. Luck, on the other hand, finished with 376 yards and touchdown through the air in leading the Colts to a second straight Wild Card victory. Adam Vinatieri made all four of his field goal tries, Daniel Herron gained 141 yards from scrimmage and ran for a touchdown, and T.Y. Hilton caught six passes for 103 yards for the AFC South champions. The Bengals were blanked by the Colts 27-0 at Lucas Oil Stadium on Oct. 19 and were not much better on offense in this one, amassing just 254 total yards. They went three-and-out on their first four possessions of the second half and essentially shelved their running attack after Luck guided back-to-back scoring drives to extend Indianapolis lead to 23-10. Luck improvised his 36-yard touchdown pass to Donte Moncrief, which put the Colts up 20-10 midway through the third quarter, as he stepped up in the pocket and hit the rookie receiver in stride just before being taken down. A holding penalty on Moncrief negated Coby Fleeners touchdown catch late in the third, and Indy wound up settling for a 22-yard Vinatieri field goal. Vinatieri booted a Colts postseason record 53-yard kick with 11:31 remaining, and Jerrell Freeman stripped Dalton inside three minutes to end any chance of a Cincy comeback. The Colts, who were held without an opening-drive touchdown during the regular season, took the initial kickoff and marched 71 yards in nine plays, with Herron -- a sixth-round pick of the Bengals in 2012 -- barreling into the end zone from two yards out. After trading punts, the Bengals embarked on their only sustainable drive the entire game. They moved the chains with a pair of third-down conversions and evened things on Jeremy Hills 1-yard plunge. Luck and Hilton narrowly missed hooking up on a several deep balls in the first quarter, but got together for a 17-yard pickup on 3rd-and-11 early in the second. Hiltons 30-yard catch-and-run on the next play set up Vinatieris 38-yard field goal. Vinatieri connected again, this time from 29 yards away, midway through the second thanks to another long completion from Luck, this one on a terrific grab by Hakeem Nicks for 45 yards. Indianapolis drove into Bengals territory inside the two-minute warning, but rookie defensive back Darqueze Dennard stripped Herron from behind and Cincinnati took over at its own 41. Just before the break, Mike Nugent got just enough behind a 57-yard attempt, banking it off the left upright for the longest kick in Bengals postseason history. Nugents previous long in his 10-year career was a 55-yarder in 2012. Game Notes The Bengals are 0-9 all-time on the road in the postseason, including Super Bowls. They have not won a playoff game since a Wild Card victory over the Oilers on Jan. 6, 1991 ... Green (concussion) and Gresham (back) both suffered their injuries in Week 17 against the Steelers, a loss that cost Cincinnati the AFC North title ... Herron recorded a game-high 10 receptions for 85 yards ... Hill was held to 47 yards on 13 carries ... Bengals starting linebacker Rey Maualuga aggravated a hamstring injury in the first quarter and did not return ... Setting United on its way to a 2-0 victory, Rooney sent the ball high from inside the halfway line over goalkeeper Adrian after just seven minutes. "Its just instinct, Ive turned and had a quick look and seen the goalkeeper off his line," Rooney said. "Its one of those Ive tried many times and thankfully today its gone in." Just as it did on the opening day of the 1996-97 season for Beckham, who lobbed Wimbledon goalkeeper Neil Sullivan from the halfway line. "Waynes technical ability, his awareness to know where the goalkeeper was, was amazing in the build-up, and then to actually execute it was superb," United manager David Moyes said. "My only worry was whether the bounce would take it over the bar or not." Moyes was actually more pleased with the second after the wonder goal. Rooney was primed in front of goal to slot in from close range in the 33rd after Mark Noble failed to fully clear Ashley Youngs low cross.dddddddddddd "He was getting in the box and leading the line," Moyes said of Rooney. Rooneys first double in almost four months moved him to third on Uniteds all-time scoring chart, 38 behind Bobby Charltons record 249. The striker, who signed a new deal through June 2019 last month, thrived at Upton Park in the absence of Robin van Persie, who is beginning at least a month out with a left knee injury. Moyes almost had to cope with a makeshift defence as United reeled off a third consecutive away win in the league without conceding, days after advancing to a Champions League quarterfinal with Bayern Munich by beating Olympiakos. However rare this comfortable league win was for Moyes seventh-place side, reaching the top four seems beyond this team, with Arsenal 11 points in front in fourth place. "The win on Wednesday night against Olympiakos has given us all a big lift," Rooney said. "You could see today the confidence running through the team, so its a good victory and were really pleased with that." 16:22ET 22-03-14 ' ' '

With the win, the Fish take a 2-1 advantage in the two teams four-game season-opening series at Amarillo National Bank Sox Stadium. In the first, with the two lead-off Winnipeg batters having already been retired, Ray Sadler got on base with a single. Reggie Abercrombie then stepped to the plate and hit a two-run home run to open the scoring. Matt Jackson then provided the Goldeyes with some fantastic pitching. Jackson allowed only four hits in his six and one-third innings of work. He struck out five, and only gave up one walk. "It was a repeat of last night with Jarvis," Goldeyes Pitching Coach Jamie Vermilyea said of Jackson on the Jewel 101 Post-Game Show, "throwing strikes and dictating each at bat." The Goldeyes offense went back to work in the top of the third. They got three runs in the frame, one on a RBI from Jake Blackwood, one on a RBI from Sadler, and one on a Sox fielding error. Winnipegs bats were quiet in the fourth through seventh innings, but their offense picked itt back up in the eighth.dddddddddddd Ryan Pineda led off the top of the inning with a solo home run. The Fish didnt stop there. In the top of the ninth, the Goldeyes loaded the bases, and Sadler hit a two RBI single that scored Kuhn and Jordan Guida — who was pinch-hitting for Alen. Sadler would end the night going an impressive four for six at the plate, with three runs, and three RBI. "When youve got your three-hole hitter locked in, good things are going to happen," said Vermilyea. The Goldeyes bullpen pitched extremely well, and was able to keep the shutout intact until the bottom of the ninth, when the Sox were able to score their two runs. One of which came on the first professional hit for Sox player Josh Miller. The 12 runs that the Goldeyes scored are the most theyve put on the scoreboard so far this season. The Goldeyes will play one more game against the Sox tomorrow at 6 p.m. with the expected pitching match-up to be Winnipegs Nick Hernandez against Amarillos Michael Nannini. The Goldeyes then head to Laredo to take on the Laredo Lemurs in a three-series that starts Monday. ' ' '
4. Steve Carrell & Paul Rudd Re-Create The DecisionIts been four years since LeBron James took part in one of the biggest PR blunders in the history of sports, a fiasco that he has since been exonerated from with his decision to return home. To some, LeBrons decision was about as about as necessary of an announcement as the one acted out by Steve Carrell and Paul Rudd in this classic ESPYs sketch.3. His appreciation is a byproduct of spending most of his first season with the Seattle Seahawks as a spectator. "Im just happy to be out here, Im happy to be healthy right now," Harvin said last month during the Seahawks organized team activities. "Were all tuned into what we have to get done this next coming year so were all just out here working. It feels tremendously good to get back on the field and be as one." Having Harvin fully healthy and ready to go from the start will be key for the Seahawks when they get to the start of training camp in late July. There are still three more days of workouts next week during minicamp to get through, but so far this off-season has been nothing but a success for Harvin in finally getting fully integrated into Seattles offence. Last season, Harvin pushed through the off-season workouts. It was a must in order to learn his new team, his new offence, his new quarterback after the trade that brought him to Seattle from Minnesota. But Harvin was never right, the pain in his hip never leaving. "I knew I had pain, I didnt know exactly what it was so I just kind of pushed through the whole last year in the off-season," Harvin said. The problem and what followed is now well known. Harvin had the labrum in his hip repaired and he played in only one regular-season game in 2013. He returned for the NFC divisional playoff game against New Orleans, only to get knocked out in the second quarter with a concussion. He missed the NFC championship game. Of course, Harvin made his presence known on the biggest stage, with two big offensive plays in the first half of the Super Bowl and his 87-yard kickoff return for a touchdown to start the second half.dddddddddddd. The Super Bowl proved to be Harvins springboard. Within a couple of weeks of the season ending, Harvin was texting teammates to make sure they were getting started on their off-season workouts. He took part with many of Seattles wide receivers, tight ends and running backs during a pseudo-camp in Southern California organized by quarterback Russell Wilson. And Harvins been getting plenty of reps during the OTAs — all without pain. "This is probably the best Ive ever felt since before college," Harvin said. Having Harvin as a full participant gives Seattle a chance to try to sort out its receiving situation early. While there is depth in the group there are also questions. Will Sidney Rice be healthy enough to return and be a contributor? Can Doug Baldwin move to the outside to replace Golden Tate and be as effective as he was playing mostly in the slot in previous seasons? And how can Seattle use Harvins skills to the fullest extent as long as hes healthy from the start of the season? "Percy is spending a lot more time out there so that is bringing a new element of speed," Seattle cornerback Ricahrd Sherman said. "Our offence is coming up with some cool concepts. Its a fun little chess game out there." NOTES: RB Marshawn Lynch was absent from the final OTA on Thursday, as hes been during the Seahawks off-season program. Coach Pete Carroll was not made available to address reports that Lynch may skip next weeks mandatory minicamp. Lynch would be subject to fines of about $70,000 if he skips next weeks final three team sessions before the start of training camp in July. "Wed love to have him ... As long as he does his thing on Sunday, I got no problems with him at all," centre Max Unger said. ' ' '

It was all Colon could do after his attempt to toss the first perfect game in New York Mets history was thwarted. Colon came within seven outs of a perfect game on Wednesday afternoon, before giving up a two-out single to Robinson Cano in the seventh inning of the Mets 3-2 win over the Mariners. Colon left a 2-2 fastball elevated on the outer half of the plate and Cano served the pitch into left field, dropping it well in front of Eric Young Jr. "Youre a little disappointed when they get a hit, but thats what theyre trying to do," Colon said through an interpreter. "Theyre trying to get a hit and break up the no-hitter." New York manager Terry Collins went one step further than disappointment. He was certain if Colon was able to get Cano to finish off the seventh he would have completed the perfect game. Collins was the Mets manager when Johan Santana ended New Yorks franchise drought without a no-hitter in 2012. "No doubt. There is no doubt in my mind that if he got by Cano he ramps it up. You see it a lot," Collins said. "But you know, great game by him." A no-hitter is one of the few things missing from Colons resume. He has a Cy Young. Hes won a World Series title. Hes made a career comeback after injuries left him out of baseball in 2010. At age 41, Colon is pitching well enough that hes regularly being talked about as trade fodder for teams needing a starter with the non-waiver trade deadline rapidly approaching. "I dont know anything about that," Colon said. "Those are decisions for the upper management and you cant control that stuff." Colon retired the first 20 batters he faced before Canos single. Colon then had to hold on as Seattle rallied in the eighth and came within inches of tying the game on Brad Millers RBI double that hit off the top of the wall. Colon (9-8) improved to 13-1 all-time at Safeco Field, including his dominance of the Mariners when he was pitching for the Angels. Seattle had no answers for the rotunnd right-hander, who gave up two runs and three hits in 7 1-3 innings.dddddddddddd "He was a Cy Young class guy," Cano said. "He knows how to pitch. Back in the day when the guy threw hard, everything was middle of the plate, fastball. Now you see a different guy that moves the ball, both sides, and a pretty good change up." Colon threw a one-hitter for the Angels against the Yankees in 2000 and was cruising until the seventh. He got the first two outs of the seventh, but Canos single ended the bid for perfection. Cano was hitting .400 against Colon entering the game. Corey Hart led off the eighth walking on a 3-2 pitch, just the fourth three-ball count Colon reached. After a fly out, Dustin Ackley singled to right, bringing the tying run to the plate. Miller nearly tied it with one swing, doubling off the top of the wall in right-centre, missing a home run by only a couple of feet. Colon was replaced by Jeurys Familia and Willie Bloomquists infield groundout scored another, but Endy Chavez struck out to end the threat. Jenrry Mejia got his 13th save pitching the ninth, despite giving up a pair of singles. "(Colon) was awesome today. Great command of his fastball. We didnt use his off-speed that much," Mets catcher Anthony Recker said. "... It made my job really easy." Daniel Murphy had an RBI double in the first and David Wright had an RBI single in the seventh. New York also had a score in the fifth when Ruben Tejada was hit in the helmet with a 94 mph fastball from Seattle starter Taijuan Walker. Tejada instantly crumpled to the ground before walking off the field on his own power. Tejada passed all initial testing and was expected to fly with the team to Milwaukee. "It scared me," Tejada said. NOTES: The Mets have 38 one-hitters in franchise history. ... Colons only loss at Safeco field came in 2001 during the Mariners 116-win season. ... Seattle LHP James Paxton (back) is expected to throw one more rehab start this weekend in the minors before possibly rejoining the club. ' ' '

REGINA -- Some children skipped school and adults did the same with work to join the crowd at a Grey Cup parade in Regina on Tuesday. The parade and rally were held to celebrate the Saskatchewan Roughriders 45-23 win over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats on Sunday in the CFLs championship game. Flatbed trucks carried players from Mosaic Stadium through part of downtown Regina that has been dubbed the "Green Mile" to the Saskatchewan legislature. Fans dressed in green and white cheered along the route, then followed the players to the rally at the provincial legislature. The biggest cheers were for Riders head coach Corey Chamblin, quarterback Darian Durant and running back Kory Sheets. "Lets go Riders," Chamblin shouted when he stepped up to the microphone at the rally, and the crowd echoed back. "I love it," said Chamblin. "This is a special place, with special people, with a special team and we deserve the cup. On behalf of the premier and the mayor, we all have the month of December off." Then came the chants of "Darian, Darian, Darian" and the Riders quarterback was greeted with wild enthusiasm. "I remember when we came back from Calgary in 2009 and I told you guys that wed be playing for plenty of Grey Cups ahead and I made that promise to you. And now Im so glad, with the help of my guys, to finally bring that Grey Cup right back here to Saskatchewan where it belongs," Durant said to the crowd. "I just want to thank everyone, especially in Rider Nation for all your support, not just for me but for this team. "We had a lot of ups and downs this season, but we stuck together, you guys stuck with us, and now this is the ultimate reward at the end of the day. Theres no better feeling than to have won this Grey Cup right here in Saskatchewan, where it belongs." The crowd screamed when Durant went inside the legislature and raised the cup on a balcony over their heads. The path to winning the CFL championship was years in the making for the Roughriders. The organization, including general manager Brendan Taman, had been working to put together a championship winning team since 2011, when it was announced that Saskatchewan would host the 101st Grey Cup. Saskatchewan last won the cup in 2007. This was the first time the Riders have won the Grey Cup on their home turf. It was also the last Grey Cup to be played at Mosaic Stadium, which will be replaced with a new facility in 2017. The players were high-fiving and hugging fans, who stood shoulder to shoulder at the rally in temperatures that dipped into the minus teens. But Regina resident Dean Dohms said he wouldnt miss it. Dohms brought his two children to the parade and rally, saying he has "authorized the hooky (from school) today." "Its just such an amazing thing that we feel they need to take part in the whole thing," said Dohms. Wholesale NFL Jerseys China .Y. -- When the New York Islanders lead was cut in half in the opening minute of the third period, the sense of impending doom began wafting through Nassau Coliseum.NEW YORK -- Accustomed to clawing back from deficits, the comeback Los Angeles Kings now must figure out how to play with a series lead. Despite not leading for a single second in this Stanley Cup final, Los Angeles has a two games to none lead on the New York Rangers. Thats not something players are proud of, but somehow it has worked. You can listen to Game 3 on TSN Radio at 8pm et/5pm pt and watch the post-game news conferences on TSN.ca and TSN GO. "We find ourselves in the same situation reguritating the same mumbo jumbo every time," winger Justin Williams said. "Were in a results-oriented league, and the results are were up 2-0. I dont care how we got here." The Kings have gotten to Monday nights Game 3 by winning four times in these playoffs after falling behind by at least two goals. One more would tie the record set by the 1987 Philadelphia Flyers. Adept, if not comfortable, at coming from behind, the bigger question for the Kings is how theyll handle what on paper is a comfortable lead over the Rangers through two games but based on the play is far from it. They already saw their 2-0 series lead over the Anaheim Ducks in the Pacific Division turn into a 3-2 deficit, and theyre hopeful that history wont repeat itself. "Momentum is a big part of playoff hockey and once a team has it, its important to try to switch the tide in your favour as quick as possible," forward Dwight King said. "The longer you let that go, like in the Anaheim series, they get a little more confident and feeling good about their game. When youre playing a team thats got that going for them, its a little tougher to defend." The Rangers sound like a confident group because theyve gone stride for stride with the seasoned Kings and could believe theyre a couple of bounces away from being up 2-0. Coach Alain Vigneault has been satisfied with his teams play save for one period, and his players are attempting to focus more on the positives on the ice than the deficit in the series. "I think we played two good games over there," forward Mats Zuccarello said after landing in White Plains, N.Y. "I think we played the best hockey." Maybe the Kings havent played their best hockey, and certainly they havent at the start of games. Theyre the first team in NHL history to win three straight playoff games after trailing by two goals, having also done it in Game 7 of the Western Conference final against the Chicago Blackhawks. Williams said he can tell a lot about teammates from studying their faces in trying times. "You can read a lot (about) what someones thinking by just looking at their face," he said. "Between the second and third (Saturday) night I looked around and I didnt see anyone scared. I saw a prepared team that knew what they had to do." Thats thanks in large part to being here before. From Williams to captain Dustin Brown, defenceman Drew Doughty, centre Anze Kopitar and goaltender Jonathan Quick down the roster, this core group has experience going deep in the playoffs. The Kings also now have a resume full of multi-goal comebacks, which hasnt necessarily made digging out of holes easier but provided perhaps some muscle memory when playing from behind. "I feel together as a team weve been through almost all of them you can imagine, and weve pulled through," Williams said. "So when were down, do we feel comfortable? No, we dont feel comfortable. But we feel like were able to come back. And belief is a very underrated attribute, and we have that going on within our team right now." Experience from the 2012 Cup run could serve Los Angeles well right about now. That Kings team went up at least two games to none in every series on the way to the franchises first championship. In these playoffs, they havent been as much of a buzz saw. They fell behind 33-0 to the San Jose Sharks in the first round before pulling off the improbable series comeback and needed seven games against the Ducks and Blackhawks, too.dddddddddddd What the Kings havent had in the same vein as their 2012 domination theyve made up for with resilience. Coach Darryl Sutter sees experience as the root of that. "Weve played a lot of hockey in May and June over the past three seasons," Sutter said. "For us, youre never not of the belief that you cant come back or youre not going to win." The Rangers, who came back from being down 3-1 to the Pittsburgh Penguins in the Metropolitan Division final, share that same belief. Vigneault was short and to the point on what he thought New York needed to do to get back into this series: win Game 3 at Madison Square Garden. "We need to hold serve," Vigneault said in White Plains. "Were back in our building. Weve played some good hockey. We might feel that we deserve a better outcome than what we have right now, which is trailing by two games. But it doesnt matter. At the end of the day we got to take care of business tomorrow, and thats what were going to do." If anyone understands the mental approach of coming back, its the Kings, who havent led for over 228 straight minutes dating back to the conference final. And while the Kings are quick to point to results, they cant believe theyve broken the Rangers spirit already. "We should know that more than anybody, that its tough to put a team down," Williams said. "Especially when youre playing for the Stanley Cup, its going to be hard to put a team down. But we need to try to step a little bit more on the throat tomorrow." Stepping on the Rangers throat might as well be code for dont fall behind by two goals again. Marian Gaborik, whom the Rangers traded at the 2013 deadline, knows more than anyone on the Kings just how the Garden can sound and feel if things get hairy for the visiting team. "To look around the building itself, it has some sort of energy that you want to be in there and just play," Gaborik said. Sutter, who has been coming to the Garden for 30 years, knows it looks different now following renovations but that the fans still have the same moxie. "They love their team and they hate the other team," he said. "Thats what you like. You like going into buildings that are like that. Theyre loud, they say they hate you, all those things, its good." Plenty of hatred has already built up between the Kings and Rangers already after two physically gruelling games. Fatigue could be a factor as well, as the teams flew back from Southern California on Sunday and did not take the ice for practice. But the Kings are used to this. They made similar trips against the New Jersey Devils in the final two years ago before ultimately lifting the Cup back home in Game 6. Theyre two victories away from doing it again. And while this group is similar to the 2012 one, Williams said he gets a similar feel to the 2006 Carolina Hurricanes Cup-champion team he was on about never being out of games. That kind of belief can go a long way, no matter the score in a game or the situation in a series. "Now we feel that anythings possible out there," Williams said. "You get down two goals, it doesnt matter. You get down three, I dont care. Were going to keep pushing, and the term 60 minutes-plus certainly applies to anyone who wants to beat us." NOTES -- Sutter did not provide an update on Jeff Carter, who left Game 2 briefly after taking a hip check from Ryan McDonagh but finished with 24:01 of ice time. The Kings coach said he wouldnt talk about injuries because he didnt have to. ... Vigneault similarly had nothing new to say about Rangers backup goalie Cam Talbot, who has been unavailable in the Cup final with an undisclosed injury. ' ' '
Phoenix, AZ (SportsNetwork.com) - Tobias Harris scored 21 points and pulled down eight rebounds to lead the Orlando Magic to a 93-90 win over the Phoenix Suns on Sunday. Orlando pushed the margin to 69-58 entering the fourth. The Magic had a game-high 16-point lead early in the fourth. P.J. Tucker converted a layup with 6:42 remaining to jumpstart an 18-6 run that cut the deficit to 83-80. Vucevic answered with a layup and Harris knocked down a technical free throw with under a minute to play to make it an 86-80 game. Orlando split two sets of free throws in the closing moments and Gerald Greens 3-pointer with 2.9 seconds cut the margin to 91-90, but Fournier hit a pair of free throws and the Suns couldnt get a shot off as time expired. The Magic led 27-23 after 12 minutes, then Anthony Tollivers 3-pointer with 7 1/2 to play in the second tied the game at 34-34. Green followed with a highlight-reel play, as he dribbled to the foul line, tossed the ball over Vucevic, off the backboard and finished the play with a dunk. The switch-hitter batted just .199 right-handed during the regular season but came up with his first two-hit game from that side of the plate since Aug. 25, emphatically tossing his bat after lining a single to centre that put the Giants ahead.Clutch hitter, Royals manager Ned Yost said. I thought we had the situation right in the palm of our hand.Lost in the torrent of runs was the earlier fit of pique by Bochy, who threw his hat to the dugout floor when his infielders botched a third-inning grounder. The mood was different by the eighth, when former Journey singer Steve Perry sprinted to the front row of the second deck behind home plate and led the crowd of 43,066 in a sing-along of When the Lights Go Down in the City. The outlook seemed far different in the third inning, when ominous, dark clouds formed over the bayside ballpark, and the Royals burst ahead 4-1 against Ryan Vogelsong with the help of the botched grounder. Orange-clad fans quieted, and there even were scattered boos. But Yusmiero Petit settled the NL champions with three innings of scoreless, two-hit relief to improve to 3-0 in the post-season, and 11 different Giants had hits, including three of 10 in thee No.dddddddddddd 9 spot; Petits single made him the first Giants reliever to get a Series hit in 78 years.Yost stayed with starter Jason Vargas into the fifth, removing him after Paniks leadoff double. Royals relievers had been 7-0 in the post-season and in Game 3 pitched four hitless innings to preserve a 3-2 win.But Yost couldnt get to his HDH triad of hard-throwing relievers: Kelvin Herrera, Wade Davis and Greg Holland.Jason Frasor and Danny Duffy combined to allow the tying run in a two-run fifth. And Brandon Finnegan, the first player to appear in the College World Series and World Series in the same year, allowed Sandovals two-run single and Brandon Belts RBIs single in the sixth. There was intermittent light rain in the early innings. Pences RBI forceout in the first gave the Giants a short-lived lead.Kansas City went ahead with a two-out four-run rally in the third with the help of two infield hits that gave the Royals 18 in the post-season, matching the total of all other teams combined. Eric Hosmer hit a slow tapper to the right side. Belt ranged far off first base to field it, and quickly looked to see if he could get a forceout at second. With no play there, Belt whirled around and tried to toss to Vogelsong. But the pitcher didnt get to the bag cleanly, messed up his footwork and had no chance to prevent Hosmer from reaching with a tying single.Bochy slammed his cap to the dugout floor. Omar Infante grounded a two-run single up the middle for a 3-1 lead, and Perez followed with a bloop single for a 4-1 lead.Occasionally I do show emotion in that dugout, Bochy said. I just felt for him. I mean, this guy was making great pitches, and we couldnt get that last out.Buster Posey cut the deficit in the bottom half with an RBI single, tying Barry Bonds team record of 21 career post-season RBIs. Pences RBI single in the fifth caused Frasor to throw up both arms in frustration, Sandoval singled Pence to third and Juan Perezs sacrifice fly made it 4-all.Oh, man, somewhere inside of me secretly I had hoped that it would go seven games for the excitement and the thrill of it, Yost said. Sure looks that way.UP NEXTRoyals: Shields has a 7.11 ERA this post-season, totalling 19 innings in four starts.Giants: Bumgarner is 3-1 with a 1.40 ERA in five post-season starts this year.PITCHERS AT THE PLATEVargas became the first AL pitcher to bat twice in a Series inning since Bostons Luis Tiant in the 1975 opener.MUSIC TO THEIR EARSCarlos Santana played The Star-Spangled Banner on a guitar, joined by son Salvador Santana on keyboards. Just before that, the ceremonial first pitch was thrown — from the rubber — by Mone Davis, the 13-year-old who this year became the first girl to pitch a shutout in the Little League World Series. Bryan Stow, the Giants fan who sustained a traumatic brain injury when he was beaten outside Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles in 2011, yelled Play Ball! ' ' '
AUGUSTA, Ga. - Billy Horschel won the Zurich Classic two weeks after the Masters last year, and thus became first on the list of players who earned their first trip to Augusta National. He just had no idea how long the list would grow. Derek Ernst won at Quail Hollow. Harris English won in Memphis. Throw in the six amateurs, and then cap it off with Matt Jones being the last man in by winning the Shell Houston Open. The final tally is a record 24 players who will be making their debut at the Masters this year. This is the 78th Masters, and only three players have won on their maiden voyage around this pristine golf course. Horton Smith won the first one in 1934. Gene Sarazen won the following year. It then took 45 years to get another Masters rookie in a green jacket — Fuzzy Zoeller in 1979. There hasnt been another one since, although the odds have never been better. Nearly 25 per cent of the field is at the Masters for the first time. Smith gets overlooked as a "Masters rookie," and rightly so. All 72 players were rookies that year. Here are the best five performances by players at Augusta National for the first time: 5. JASON DAY: He qualified for his first Masters by winning the Byron Nelson Championship for his first PGA Tour victory. The 23-year-old Australian was loaded with far more talent than victories to show for it, but he took a liking to a course that had never produced a champion from Down Under. Day shot an 8-under 64 in the second round to get within two shots of the lead, and the only reason he didnt get more attention was because 21-year-old Rory McIlroy was ahead of him. And they played in the same group, along with 22-year-old Rickie Fowler. This was in 2011, the year McIlroy lost a four-shot lead with an 80 in the final round. Day hung around to the very end, and when he finished with a birdie for a 68, he was tied for the clubhouse lead with Adam Scott. Behind them was Charl Schwartzel, who took the outright lead with a birdie on the 17th and rolled in his fourth straight birdie on the final hole for a two-shot win. Day went home with a silver medal as a runner-up in his debut. 4. HUSTON, WE HAVE A PROBLEM: John Huston became known as the most feared player in golf — on Tuesday in money games with the pros. He won seven times on the PGA Tour, the first won coming in 1990 that made him eligible for his first Masters. He opened with a 66, leaving him two shots behind Mike Donald. And while he followed with a 74 in the second round, he still trailed by only two shots. Huston had a 68 in the third round to stay within two shots of former Masters champion Raymond Floyd. Better yet, he was in the final group, giving him an excellent chance to become the first Masters rookie to win since Zoeller. Alas, Huston fell back with a 75 on the final round. The winner came from back in the pack — Nick Faldo made up four shots on Floyd with six holes to play, and then won on the second extra hole when Floyd hit into the water on No. 11. Huston tied for third in his debut. He played the Masters 12 more times and never had a higher finish. 3. POHLS CLOSE CALL: Dan Pohl made an inauspicious debut in 1982 when he opened with a pair of 75s. That would have missed the cut at most other Masters, but not this one. Conditions were tough by rain the opening two days, leading to the highest cut (10-over 154) in Masters history. He was still six shots behind. Pohl, the longest hitter on tour, followed with a 67 on Saturday on the strength of back-to-back eagles on the 13th and 14th holes, though he still was six shots out of the lead. And even with the low score of the final round — another 67 — it didnt appear to do much good. Craig Stadler was six shots ahead going to the back nine until the Walrus started dropping shots. Stadler wound up with a 73, and suddenly Pohl was in a sudden-death playoff. It didnt last long. Pohl missed a 6-foot par putt on the first playoff hole at No. 10, and Stadler made par to win. Pohl had to settle for silver. 2. THE SHOT HEARD ROUND THE WORLD: Gene Sarazen hit the shot that put the Masters on the map and won at Augusta National in his first try. But being a "rookie" at the Masters wasnt that big of a deal. The Augusta National Invitation Tournament was only in its second year. Sarazen missed the inaugural event, and this "rookie" had already won six majors, the first of them 13 years earlier. Still, what he did that day cannot be overlooked and will not be forgotten. Trailing by three shots, he hit 4-wood into the hole for an albatross on the par-5 15th hole to force a playoff with Craig Wood. In the only 36-hole playoff in Masters history, Sarazen shot even-par 144 to win by five. He remains the only player to complete the career Grand Slam at Augusta National. 1. FUZZYS FIRST MAJOR: Zoeller whistled his way into the record books as the first major champion to win a sudden-death playoff. The Masters went away from the traditional 18-hole playoff in 1979, and it turned out to be memorable. Much like Pohl, Zoeller was never really in the picture until someones misfortune on the back nine. Zoeller was six shots behind going into the last round and closed with a 70. It looked like it would be a good debut at the Masters, nothing more. That was before Ed Sneed, who had a three-shot lead with three holes to play, finished with three bogeys. That led to a three-man playoff among Sneed, Zoeller and former Masters champion Tom Watson. On the second playoff hole, Zoeller knocked in a birdie putt and leapt into the air to celebrate. Was it a big deal for a Masters rookie to win? "They didnt bring up until the next year," Zoeller said. Chicago White Sox Gear . The 19-year-old Hanyu, who trailed compatriot Tatsuki Machida by nearly seven points after the world championships short program, produced a near-flawless free skate to finish with 282.59 points, just three-tenths of a point ahead of Machida. Javier Fernandez of Spain was third with 275.93. "That was very close," Hanyu said. "I work hard to become a skater who can always end with strong performances. I felt the responsibility to win the event." Hanyu fell twice during the free skate at the Sochi Olympics but had no falls on Friday. "What I can take away from this is that even if Im not feeling 100 per cent, I know that I can still do the job, and that should give me confidence when I do feel good." World junior champion Nam Nguyen of Toronto was 12th while Elladj Balde of Pierrefonds, Que., was 18th. "Skating in front of 20,000 plus people, its amazing," said the 15-year-old Nguyen. WINNIPEG -- Winnipeg Jets forward Evander Kane says he did throw three punches, but only in defence, as he was attacked in Vancouver by a man now suing him for assault. Vancouver resident Lev Makievsky has said he was returning home from work Aug. 10, 2013, in the downtown area when he was assaulted by Kane, who is from Vancouver. His statement of claim gave no details of the alleged incident but listed a long series of injuries he says he incurred, including a concussion and an unnamed permanent physical disability. Kanes lawyers have filed a response that says he has known Makievsky for about four years and encountered him at about 2 a.m. on the date in question. It says Makievsky tried to get Kane to fight and when he declined, charged and swung at Kane, who responded with three punches and knocked his attacker down. Then, as Makievsky got up and swung again, Kane pushed him down and left. "The Plaintiff was highly confrontational and shouted insults at the Defendant," says Kanes response filed in the Supreme Court of British Columbia. "When the Defendant attempted to walk away, the Plaintiff said lets go and suggested that the Defendant should engage in a physical fight with him." The response also says Makievsky was heard boasting at work the next night that he planned to sue Kane. "The Defendants conduct was at all times consistent with preventing or repelling the Plaintiff from attacking him. The Defendant used no more than reasonable force to defend himself from the Plaintiff." Kanes response notes no charges have been laid. Vancouver police have said they did investigate an incident that night and found no basis on which to lay charges. Fake Angels Jerseys . SAN ANTONIO -- Although the San Antonio Spurs seem rather methodical and downright boring to some, they are enjoying themselves this season and that is ruining the fun for others. Tony Parker scored 19 points before sitting out the fourth quarter and the Spurs beat the Boston Celtics 104-93 Wednesday night, winning their eighth straight overall and remaining undefeated at home. San Antonio had 27 assists and six players score in double figures, rallying from a lethargic start to lead by as many as 19 points in the second half. "Those moments when we start to play better D, push the ball and be more aggressive, then its fun to watch, its exciting and thats what we need," San Antonio guard Manu Ginobili said. "We are not exciting in a way that were going to have alley-oops and windmills (dunking) and stuff like that, but we pass the ball really well. We penetrate and pitch, and everybody gets involved and thats fun." Kawhi Leonard had 16 points and Tim Duncan rebounded from a poor outing in San Antonios previous home game to score 13 points. Boris Diaw had 12 points, Tiago Splitter added 11 points and 10 rebounds and Danny Green 11 points for the Spurs (10-1). San Antonio shot 48 per cent from the field and was 8 for 21 on 3-pointers as Boston struggled to close on the Spurs shooters. "Phew," Celtics forward Jared Sullinger said, exhaling when asked about the Spurs ball movement. "Theyre a tough team to play. On any given night, anybody can go off. Honestly, they move the ball. They care less about scoring; they play together as a team. "They have go-to players but they hardly ever use them because they move the ball so well and they play as a team, so theyre hard to guard. Sullinger, Avery Bradley and Jeff Green each had 19 points for Boston (4-9), which has lost five straight. There were 10 lead changes and 14 ties in the first half, as neither team was able to sustain any momentum. While the Spurs werent happy with the early efforts, first-year coach Brad Stevens was pleased with the Celtics forging a 48-all tie at the half. "The team that played tonight could be a really fun group to build with," Stevens said. "I think thats what you take from here. We talked about this early in the year. Theres going to be nights where we measure progress a little bit differently." That progress was stunted in the second half, as San Antonio was able to pull away mmidway through the third quarter behind strong individual efforts by Leonard, Parker and Ginobili.dddddddddddd Leonard keyed the resurgence, scoring 10 of 12 points, including a 3-pointer that put San Antonio ahead 61-52 with 8 minutes left in the quarter. "He can do that kind of thing," Diaw said. "He is really talented and he proved that already last year. This year is no different. Sometimes, when he gets it going, it is going to be very hard to stop (him)." Leonard had 12 points, five rebounds and two steals in the third quarter, as San Antonio outscored Boston 32-22. "Im still having fun; thats why Im still playing," Leonard said. "Were winning, you cant have more fun than that, when youre winning and on a good team." Parker made two dazzling layups, first presenting the ball with his right hand to draw a defender out of the lane and spinning back for a layup between defenders and then spinning away from a defender in the lane for a layup on the right side of the basket. Ginobili literally wrapped a pass around a defender, tossing behind around a charging Brandon Bass to find Diaw cutting to the basket for a layup. Ginobili finished with five points and six assists. After scoring only two points in the Spurs previous home game against Washington, Duncan made the games first two baskets as the team targeted him early. He finished 3 for 13, but was 7 for 8 on free throws while also grabbing nine rebounds. NOTES: San Antonio is tied with Indiana for the leagues best record, but its victories have come against teams with a combined winning percentage of .408 entering Wednesdays games. Only two the Spurs wins have come against teams above .500. Their only loss was against Portland, which is 10-2 after defeating Milwaukee. ... Bostons Keith Bogans was not with the team due to an undisclosed illness. ... San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich was issued a technical foul with 4 minutes left in the game after haranguing referee David Guthrie continually for a lack of calls. Popovich smiled, appearing amused by the technical. ... The Big Three of Duncan, Parker and Ginobili have played 629 games together, which is the most amongst active teammates and fifth all-time. The trio surpassed Derek Harper, Brad Davis and Rolando Blackman of the Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday and trail the leading trio of Robert Parrish, Kevin McHale and Larry Bird by 100 games played together.
